Nightwish是由作曲及鍵盤手Tuomas Holopainen和Emppu Vuorinen於1996年成立。Tuomas和後來加入的女主音Tarja Turunen是整隊樂隊的主軸。Tuomas在金屬領域上的鬼才和Tarja驚豔的歌德女高音嗓門成功打造出Nightwish的黃金時代。

《Gethsemane》是Tarja其中一首高音最為突出的歌曲，配合上Tuomas多變的keyboard演奏，令歌曲儼如加上電結的古典歌劇。在歌詞中，《Gethsemane》流露出非常強烈的宗教氣息。從歌名、Father(神父)、Shepherd(牧師)等字眼，顯示到其特意強調的宗教色彩。但是，在字裡行間，可以洞察到其歌詞描述的並非耶穌基督。(Have made you mine 'till all my years are done)，可以看到其歌詞似乎是在描述一位單戀的要生要死的人(Without you the poetry within me is dead)。明顯地，Tuomas希望營造出一種如史詩般悽美的愛情悲劇。然而，在各方面的成功配合下，他成功將之營造出來了。
